South African Fashion Week - New Talent Search

‘The New Point of View Challenge’ is the sought-after opportunity designers are looking for to utilize an expressive design process. This is for the Avant-garde, the street, the minimalist or the contemporary designer. This is for the aspiring designer or fashion house that is serious about the business of fashion.

Eligible designers will take part in a three phase creative process where designers will submit portfolio’s and from these finalists will be selected to present an inimitable 8 garment collection.

Innovation, Inspiration, Construction and Design will be major focal points for judges. The third phase will see finalists showcase a satellite collection as part of a 4 designer package at the SA Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015 Season.

SAFW 2014 Collections

The 2013’s winning collection was Cutterier by Laz Yani – an Eastern Cape native and a student of pattern and fashion engineering at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and of the London International School of Fashion. Yani presented his collection themed the new language of confidence at the Spring/Summer 2014 showcase.

Inspired by reading brail for his Lufthansa 1st Best Spring/Summer 2014 Collection, the aim was to showcase the beauty of this form of reading which is designed for the blind. The young fashion designer has gone on to collaborate with leading crystal brand Swarovski for the collection, writing inspirational words in brail out of crystals.

The Swarovski brand has commissioned collections by the likes of Austrian born Heinz Tabertshofer.

Spring 2014

Design is an integral element of the Renault brand. The winner of the Talent Search is set to:

1. Drive away with a Renault Megane
2. R 15 000 cash injection for the development of the winning designers collection
3.  1 years representation by The Fashion Agent
4. Collection features in media and access to the buyers lounge – Autumn Winter 2014/15 showcase

Editor’s Sidenote: The winner will also gain access to showcase their collection at the eclectic SA Fashion Week Pop Up Shop to be setup in Brooklyn Mall in 2015.
